YOUR JUNIOR YEAR

  • Do well in school — grades are important!
  • Take the PSAT in October.  Only the junior-year scores  apply in the determination of National Merit Scholarship awards.  The PSAT is a good practice test to take before taking the SAT I.
  • Gather information about careers and colleges by:
    • Looking over college information books and directories available in the Guidance Department and bookstores.
    • Exploring the many college web sites.
    • Meeting with college representatives and career speakers.  Conferences are listed outside the Guidance office.
    • Attending the New England Association of College Admissions Counselors College Fair at the University of New Hampshire Field House in the fall.
    • Visiting colleges.
    • Talking with your counselor, parents, and teachers, particularly those in the areas in which you are most interested; older brothers and sisters or friends in college; and professionals in the fields you are thinking of pursuing.
  • Meet with your guidance counselor to talk about college requirements and where your academic qualifications place you.
  • Develop a preliminary list of colleges (10 to 20) that most interest you and ask these colleges for information (write or e-mail).
  • Research financial aid and scholarship information.
  • Take the SAT I, American College Test (ACT), and/or any SAT II (Subject Tests) in the spring.
  • Organize your plans for the summer.  Look for a job or a summer program, e.g. St. Paul’s School, Outward Bound.  Summer school information is on file in the Guidance Department and Peterson’s Summer Opportunities for Kids and Teenagers is available on loan.
