In December, H1N1
vaccine eligibility in New Hampshire was opened to anyone 6 months or older
wishing to receive a vaccine. The Strafford County All Health Hazard Region
is working to schedule additional free, public H1N1 clinics to provide access
to as many community members as possible. Both the flu shot and intranasal
spray will be available. The next clinic will
take place on Thursday, January 7, 2010 from 3:30 – 6:30 PM at Rochester
Middle School, 47 Brock Street, Rochester, NH. We anticipate another
clinic to be scheduled in Dover the week of January 11th although
this has not yet been confirmed. |

Dear Colleagues, In the past couple of weeks, the
WHO and the CDC have been strongly emphasizing the notion that one way to
save lives and lighten the burden on our health care system is to prevent
severe illness. Early treatment is important to prevent severe illness
for certain groups. There are several distinct groups
of people who need to contact a health care provider or seek treatment at the
very onset of flu symptoms. Those include: pregnant women, children 0-2
year olds, adults 65 years of age and older, anyone with underlying medical
conditions including but not limited to asthma, neurological and
neurodevelopmental conditions, chronic lung disease, heart disease, and more
(see comprehensive list here: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/highrisk.htm).
In addition, anyone who presents with severe illness, and that can look
different in children and adults, must seek immediate medical attention.
Please help get the word out. Here is a handout that I like that
emphasizes this important issue: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/freeresources/2009-10/pdf/what_to_do_if_you_get_sick.pdf Some weekend reading: US Situation update: http://www.cdc.gov/H1n1flu/update.htm
(note that pediatric deaths are up higher than any previous weeks). NH Situation update: http://www.nh.gov/h1n1/publications/documents/H1N1update11_07_2009pdf

Here is the link to a NH Outlook program that has been
airing this week on H1N1 with Dr. Jose Montero, NH DHHS, Director Kathleen
Murphy, Department of Education, and Dr. Oglesby Young practicing OB/GYN and
past president of the NH Medical Society. I think this video recording
is quite informative; a good program to share with school community
members: http://www.nhptv.org/outlook/sprogramdate.asp?prog_num_id=1650 |
